I personally observed and photographed this phenomenon in the wetlands of Parco di San Rossore in Tuscany on January 26, 2025, at 2:45 PM, and it was a truly unique experience.

A key role is played by anaerobic decomposer bacteria—particularly sulfur-reducing bacteria—which break down organic matter and release natural oily compounds. The interaction between these substances and the surface tension of the water creates the characteristic rainbow effect. The ideal conditions occur on sunny days following periods of rainfall.

Rainbow swamps are a seasonal phenomenon, appearing mainly in autumn and early winter. During this time, environmental conditions favor the decomposition of fallen leaves and other organic material, increasing the concentration of oily compounds on the water’s surface. In addition, low-angle sunlight at sunrise or sunset further enhances the iridescent effect.
